Purpose
Repair Cafes are a worldwide movement, with the intent of helping people learn to repair things instead of throwing them away. Local volunteers host pop-up events to provide fixing skills, and help repair everyday items for free, like small appliances, mechanical devices, computers, bicycles, and clothing.
FAQ
How much does it cost?
All repairing is free! If your repair requires a part (a special lightbulb, a timer, a button etc) then we ask that you bring it with you, and one of our volunteers will help you repair with it. If you are delighted with your fix, then we ask that you consider making a donation at the end, to help us cover the costs of hosting the event!
What items can't you repair?
We cannot repair anything too large to bring to the cafe (fridges, industrial machinery etc), requiring a long diagnosis and/or repair time (non-functional sewing machines, backpack zippers), needing new parts you do not have on hand, or involving repair skills our volunteers do not have (hard soldering, silver/gold brazing for jewelry). We will do our best to recognize when we can't fix your item as quickly as possible, so you don't have to wait too long to find out.
How long will I have to wait?
Wait times are very unpredictable, depending how busy the repairers are for your particular repair type. Coming early is the best strategy for a shorter wait time. While you wait, we have plenty of free things to do though! A giveaway table, snacks, crafting, a plant swap, hair trims, guitar lessons, reiki healing, and more!
Can I book an appointment?
We are not yet ready to to do an appointment system, but it is something we would like to implement in the future! If you have experience with ticketing systems, we'd love your help, so please email us at: westsiderepaircafe@gmail.com
How often do you run Repair Cafes?
We usually run a Repair Cafe every 3 months, but would love to have them happen more often, as we grow. If you go to the Links page, you can find a list of other repair cafes in LA and SoCal, in case there's one closer to you, or happening sooner.
Do you need volunteers?
We always need volunteers! We would love to hear from people:
with repair skills (small appliances, electrical, mechanical, sewing, knife sharpening, bike repair, or anything else you can do)
who would like to help us keep things running (check-in, check-out, runners, food table, giveaway table and more)
who can help us with behind-the-scenes stuff like data entry, website, email list, outreach, etc.
